Oxidative stress markers, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced
glutathione (GSH) levels as well as glutathione-S-transferase (GST)
and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in control, CP intoxication,
silymarin treated and MPS administered rats are shown in
Figs. 3e6. Administration of CP significantly (P < 0.05) increased
the level of MDA and activity of GST in the liver tissue as compared
to control (Figs. 3 and 6). On the other hand, CP caused significant
decrease (P < 0.05) in GSH level and SOD activity as compared to
control (Figs. 4 and 5). Treatment of rats either with MPS extract
and/or silymarin (500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight) significantly
increased (P < 0.05) the level of GSH level and SOD activity and
decreased level of MDA and activity of GST.
