Illness during travel was reported by 33 (27%) respondents. Illness mild enough that the respondents did not need to see a doctor or nurse was reported by 26 (79%) of the 33; 6 were ill enough to see a doctor or nurse; and 1 needed hospitalization. The most common signs and symptoms were diarrhea (21%), sore throat (11%), nausea/vomiting (9%), congestion/runny nose (8%), and coughing (7%). Illness during travel was significantly associated with longer trips (mean 24.8 vs. 15.1 days, p Z .005) and travel to rural areas (39% vs. 18%, p Z .03). Respondents who had their appointments 14 days or less prior to departure were more likely to report illness during travel than travelers whose appointments were more than 14 days prior to departure (35% vs. 21% reporting illness (p Z .05).
