ABSTRACT
The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) is an important fruit crop not only in the Philippines but also to other tropical countries where jackfruit is being grown. On-site selection and evaluation of nine accessions of jackfruits grown from seeds were harvested from different backyards in Batangas, Laguna, Mindoro and Cavite to identify potential trees for table or processing types. The fruits were characterized using IBPGRI Descriptor for Jackfruit and evaluated for diversity using Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index, on the basis of 20 morphological traits, nine (9) of which were qualitative and eleven (11) were quantitative traits.
Most accessions have oblong fruit shape, greenish yellow skin color, yellow or light yellow pulp color, firm pulp texture, mild pulp aroma, juicy and sweet pulp, reniform seed shape, and creamish seed coat color. The fruit weight had the highest variation ranging from 7,575.00 to 18,050 weight. JF 5 and 7, both weighing more than 15kg, were selected as potential accessions for processing type. The computed mean diversity index for qualitative traits (0.39) suggests a low variability among the morphological characters observed. Seventy percent (70%) of the total traits observed had ≤ 0.50 diversity indices ranging from 0-0.71 diversity index with pulp texture being the most diverse. There was no variation observed in the pulp taste. On the other hand, the computed diversity indices among quantitative traits ranged from 0.5 to 0.75. The highest variation was observed in fruit weight (0.75) followed by fruit length, % edible portion (EP), and core weight all having 0.73 diversity index. Total weight of seeds and core diameter are not good indicators of variability since both have low estimates of variability. On the average, the quantitative traits have medium variability with a value of 0.66 diversity index.
