Over the past decades a number of countries
have been confronted with workforce issues in
health care such as, for instance, existing or
emerging shortages of primary care physicians.
Several solutions have been suggested including
an increased use of the nursing workforce to
tackle these shortages. The role of the Advanced
Practice Nurse (APN), particularly the Nurse
Practitioner (NP) role, has received increasing attention
in this regard. [1–3]
