John Maxwell, in his book, Your Road Map for Success says, “Success is knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential and sowing seeds that benefit others.”
I personally believe that this definition of success sets out a goal that is worthy of our effort. If every single person set out to do the three things highlighted in this definition, the world would become a different and better place.
Joseph was one of the great leaders in the Hebrew Scriptures. He was a man who knew his purpose, grew to his potential and sowed seeds to benefit others. And I think his life models for us some key characteristics that are part of successful life; five abilities we need to develop to become successful people.
Five Abilities You Need to Succeed
1. Availability – The ability to surrender to God.
Joseph’s life was marked by the favor of God. It seems as if everywhere Joseph went and everything Joseph did, the presence of God was with him. Right from the first moment that we meet Joseph in Genesis 37 God is revealing His plan to Joseph in a dream. And as we walk through Joseph’s experience in the following chapters we see that God is with him in the pit. God is with him in Potiphar’s house. God was with him in the prison. And God was with him in the palace. God was with Joseph.
Why was Joseph’s life was marked so demonstratively with the presence of God? The answer is simple – he was surrendered to God. Like every other great influencer for God, Joseph had learned how to make himself available to God.
I would contend that this is the first and most important ability any person should possess. This is the foundational element of any life that will be used greatly by God. If we do not make ourselves available to God, we close ourselves off to what God wants to do in and through us. But if we do make ourselves available to God, there is no limit to what God can do through us.
If we want to be successful in life, it all begins with the ability to surrender ourselves completely to God. Joseph knew how to do that and that is what allowed him to stay in the center of God’s will and God’s blessing for his life.
Success begins with surrendering ourselves to God. Availability – it’s the first ability you need to succeed.
