“Srinakharinwirot” is a royally bestowed name by King Bhumibol Adulyadej for the university that was upgraded from the College of Education in 1974. The aim of this article is to study the political history of that name and to point out that requesting such a name came together through the process of upgrading the college. In this article, I propose that the conditions which lead the college receiving the royally bestowed name were due to: first, educational politics involved in upgrading the college to university level; second, that the cultural politics of university students from the late 1950s up until Oct 14th, 1973, was due to democracy uprising; and third, that royal activities were closely associated with undergraduate students, such that royals privately visited and played music at Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Kasetsart, Prasarn Mitr and Mahidol, respectively, during the 1960s to early 1970s. Furthermore, this article also intends to pave the way to writing a historical biography of Srinakharinwirot University.
