The shangri la is an excellent hotel that lives up to it's 5* promise. Tucked away in a slightly random side street with slightly odd entrance arrangement, the hotel is a beautfuk and serene spot on the river - having a later lunch at the all day restaurant watching the river life go by while enjoying great meal and exceptional service was a wonderful welcome to Bangkok. The staff are amazing and the butler service surprisingly useful and enjoyable! The krungthrup wing is a little on the quiet side but that us nice and you can always walk to the other side.
Our only complaint would be the Italian restaurant which could and should be a 5* experience but sadly wasn't. By the time our starter arrived we still hadn't received the bread (which seemed like it had been frozen or reheated too many times) and the wine remained missing after a frustrating conversation with the waiter who initially offered 'advuce' and claimed the sommelier was away ( he wasn't!). They also rushed us into main cousre so we had just about tasted the wine as that arrived. The team tried to make up for it with free pudding but I would rather they'd got it mire right from the start! That aside the hotel was still excellent.
