For all other animals, a plot of the an-
imal movements was printed out with a scale bar of known dimensions. The MCP was cut out of the paper and weighed on a scale.
The area of the MCP was determined from the MCP cutout scaled by
the mass of a cutout of a known area based on the scale bar. Calculating a MCP for an octopus required at least two
movements. MCP sample size there-
fore differs from that for maximum net displacement.
MCPs from both near-continuous and intermittent tracking were
combined for analyses.
