Also the part of this line ‘was set’ which contains sibilance, seems to be dealing with the shortness of time, perhaps both metaphorically in a spiritual sense and literally, as days are shorter in winter. The metaphor ‘visible for many a mile’ describe that the windows of the cottage (mentioned in the next line) are visible from far away, emphasizing the remoteness of the house.
