Minimising the risk of mortality
To minimise the risk of mortality it is important to:
■■ Identify those with poorly controlled epilepsy andensuring they have access to specialised centres. A referral
to epilepsy specialists for a review is important
■■Offer continued education/information about epilepsy.
AEDs should always be taken as prescribed and the child
should never run out of medications. Patient should take
missed doses of AEDs as soon as they remember. Encourage
patients, or their parents, to keep seizure diaries
■■Refer patient to practice nurse for counselling and education
