Mobilization may be passive or active at first, depending on a patient’s condition. It will progress variably from ability to move in bed, to sitting in bed, to sitting up, to transferring, to operating a wheelchair, to standing and bearing weight, and eventually to walking. Basic self-care activities, including feeding, grooming, toileting, bathing, and dressing, are encouraged as soon as possible. Training in compensatory strategies and use of adaptive devices is offered to any patient with persistent disability with any aspect of mobility or self-care.
