The reduction and fragmentation of natural and semi-natural habitats, as an outcome of agricultural intensification, infrastructure networks and urbanization, have been suggested as the main reasons for the current biodiversity crisis (Gurrutxaga et al., 2010). Ecological planning is playing an increasingly important role in natural conservation policies and strategies, recognizing that it is necessary to integrate protected areas of an entire territory both ecologically and socio-economically (Bennett, 2004 and IUCN, 1994).
