Forest run-off from monsoon rains has ravaged areas of two widely separated provinces, Prachin Buri and Satun, causing the death of one person and affecting over 500 households.

In Prachin Buri’s Muang district, runoff hit Wang Bo waterfall in the compound of the Khao Yai national park. One woman drowned when she was swept away by the water, said Mr Chatchai.

In Satun, four districts -- Manang, Muang, Khuan Don and La-ngu -- were hit by runoff. A total of 544 households were affected. There were no reports of casualties, said the department chief.

If there was no more rain, the flooding would recede with a day or two, he said.

The department has coordinated with military units and local agencies to help residents in flood-hit areas. Rapid deployment teams and necessary equipment have been put on standby to help affected residents, said Mr Chatchai.

Residents could contact the department for assistance via its hotline 1784 around the clock, he added.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, Wang Kum community in Muang district was flooded when a major waterway burst its banks on Wednesday, sending water pouring through their houses and across farmland.

Officials from the Nakhon Ratchasima disaster prevention and mitigation office inspected the situation at Wang Kum following complaints by residents that the opening of six sluice gates at the Phimai dam caused Lam Nam Khem waterway to rise sharply and burst its banks. This caused the flood that devastated their homes, they said.
