Physical findings Physical findings are observed during a thorough mucocutaneous examination. When examining the mouth, the patient should be positioned such that lighting is optimal. A tongue depressor may be used to retract tissue carefully during the examination. A gloved finger, moistened with water, may be used to palpate the tissue. Any evidence of mucosal distortion must be palpated to exclude induration or infiltration.
