Short-term Objective Lessons are intended to help students reach a measurable, short-term objective. A series of lessons, often combined with activities, leads to the attainment of a long-term objective or goal. Long and short are not exact terms and cannot be defined precisely. We cannot give exact definitions or numbers, but consider the following example. Mrs. Lopez wants her students to learn to add and subtract fractions with uncommon denominators. She breaks up the lesson objectives, such as finding least common multiples, converting improper fractions, and so on. She will plan a lesson for each of those short-term objectives. Mrs. Lopez may decide to teach the lesson on least common multiples in 20 minute periods over 3 days. She considers this one lesson because she is not going to formally evaluate until after the third day. She will, however, want to monitor each student’s success before going on. The students will not have received all of the necessary instruction to reach the short-term objective until Day 3.
