Allegiant Air flew its last flight of Gary-Chicago International Airport on Saturday, which officially makes commercial passenger flights a thing of the past at "Chicago´s third real airport".
Allegiant is the latest in a line of six airlines since 1999 that have tried offering service out of the small airport but ultimately pulled out.
Nevertheless, there is still hope for Gary. A project to lengthen the airport’s main runway is still underway. It would allow the airport to handle bigger planes.
