ECT practice
Patient safety There is ongoing work with regard
to patient safety. An adaptation of the Situation,
Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR)
communication tool is routinely used for team
briefings at the start of each session (NHS Institute
for Innovation and Improvement, undated). This
helps staff to share information that is relevant
to each discipline. It develops team working and
fosters a culture of patient safety. The service has
also developed an adaptation of the World Health
Organization (2009) patient safety checklist for
use before delivering ECT. It has developed and
implemented a comprehensive referral form that
assists in the assessment, review and preparation of
patients before starting a course of ECT.
