Upper Genital Tract Infection
Endometrial samples were cultured for N gonorrhoeae and tested for C trachomatis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis, IN) using standard manufacturer’s protocols. The presence of either or both of these pathogens in the endometrium was defined as UGTI. Endometritis represented inflammation, and UGTI repre- sented infection in the upper genital tract consistent with salpingitis. Several studies have shown a strong correlation between salpingitis as visualized by laparoscopy, the gold standard for PID diagnosis, and endometritis.
