The paper will begin with a brief overview of the Peranakan culture and identity, from
its glorious history, its vanishing past to its process of revival with an emphasis on the
discussion of the aesthetics of Nyonya beadwork in relation to the changing social role of the Nyonyas within the Peranakan communities. An introduction of the techniques,
materials, making process and procedures of constructing a Nyonya practice base
beadwork workshop will be presented. Within this context, the practice base
workshop explores ways to reconnect Nyonya beadwork to a larger public, not
restricting itself within the Peranakan community. The workshop aims to experience
cross-cultural collaboration on bead craft and design, thereby exploring and
appreciating the differences and similarities amongst cultures in the making process.
Design and related techniques that lead to the making process of beadwork encourage
discussion on influencing changes to artistic interpretation. Being a ‘hybrid’ Peranakan
culture, the collaboration with the participants from different countries would
potentially display a greater ‘hybridity’ of aesthetic interpretation for beadwork
