The principle of double articulation enables man to create language with large numbers of signs, but the inventory of signs is finite.
>The number of sounds in a language is usually between 10 to 100. The language with the fewest sounds (phonemes): Rotokas (11 phonemes). Language with the largest alphabet: Khmer (74 letters).
>The total number of isolated signs in human language is generally limited to roughly 10,000 -20,000. Language with the most words: English, approx. 250,000 distinct words.
How is it possible to communicate infinite ideas when the inventory of signs (words) is limited?
