Operation process chart (OPC) is an analytical tool that shows the sequence of all operations, inspections, time allowances, and materials used in a manufacturing process. Figure 1 shows an example of an OPC (next page). Constructing and analyzing an OPC help an analyst understand the process and determine what areas have more possibilities for improvement. Information needed to construct an OPC can be obtained from direct observations and measurements. Some benefits that can be gained from constructing an OPC are from an overall understanding of the process, which help identify potential improvement that can be made to the process. Examples are eliminating unnecessary steps, combining some operations, or rearranging the sequences of the operational steps.
