(I) A consumer watchdog organisation believes the Super Cola Company is underfilling its 750 ml bottles. Consider two experiments:
(a) A random sample of 10 bottles reveals contents as follows (in ml):
740 755 733 754 730 758 740 736 746 753
(b) A random sample of 900 bottles reveals a mean content of 749 ml with a standard deviation of 6 ml. In each case, what should the consumer organisation conclude?
(II) Suppose (for the sake of demonstrating something interesting) we wish to compare the mean height of adults in New South Wales and Queensland. We have two large samples, each of size 1,000,000! The mean for NSW is 165.28 cm with standard deviation 5.13 cm and the mean for Queensland is 165.32 cm with standard deviation
5.21 cm. Are these means significantly different?
