This study has several limitations. First, we did not
include a comparison street in the area to address potential displacement from other streets without lanes to St.
Claude. Second, it is possible that more people chose to
ride a bicycle than drive because of the rising costs of
car ownership, including gas prices, and not the lanes.
This would imply that a decrease in gas prices would be
related to a decrease in the number of people cycling for
transportation. During the observation period, the average price of gas in New Orleans was $2.65 per gallon in
November 2007;13 while in November 2008, the average price was $1.67 per gallon.14 Although gas prices
decreased in this period, we observed an overall 56.8%
increase in the number of riders
