APPLYING FOR A WORK & HOLIDAY VISA TO AUSTRALIA
Subclass 462
Who should apply for a Work and Holiday, Subclass 462 visa?
The Thailand - Australia Work & Holiday arrangement is a reciprocal program with 500 places
available for Thai applicants each financial year (1 July – 30 June). The program provides young
people with the opportunity for a 12 month holiday with permission to work if they wish so that
they can enjoy the cultural experience and interaction of living and working in Australia.
Participants may only work for any one employer for a maximum of 6 months. Applicants must
also have the financial capacity to support themselves so that they do not have to rely entirely on
earnings from their incidental employment.
You might be able to get this visa if you:
are at least 18 but have not turned 31 years of age at the time you lodge your application
will not be with a dependent child while you are in Australia
have enough money to support yourself on a working holiday (about AUD 5000)
have enough money to buy a return or onward travel ticket at the end of your stay
have not previously entered Australia on a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)
meet the educational requirements
have functional English
have a letter of support from the Office of Welfare Promotion, Protection and Empowerment
of Vulnerable Groups in Bangkok
meet character and health requirements
are a genuine visitor.
Functional English
You must provide evidence that you have functional English. This can be:
Achieved an IELTS average band score of at least 4.5 based on the four test components of
speaking, reading, writing and listening in a test conducted no more than 2 years before lodging the
visa application. For visa purposes applicants only need to sit the General Training Module or
Achieved a TOEFL score of 133 on a computer based test, or 450 on a paper based test or
45-46 on an internet-based test, no more than 2 years before lodging the visa application or
Passed the Occupational English Test no more than 2 years before lodging the visa
application or
Completed all years of primary education and at least 3 years of secondary education at an
educational institution in which all instruction was conducted in English or
Completed at least 5 years of secondary education (high school) at an educational institution
in which all instruction was conducted in English or
Completed a post-secondary qualification that required at least 2 years of full-time study or
training, in which all tuition was in English or2
Successfully completed, in Australia, at least 1 year of full-time study or equivalent parttime
study towards a degree, higher degree, diploma or associate diploma at an institution or
institutions where all the instruction was conducted in English.

There is an application charge for this visa. This will not be refunded if your application is
unsuccessful, or if you decide to withdraw your application after you have lodged it. The

What do I need to provide?

not exhaustive. You should provide documents certified as true copies of the original, with the
exception that we require the original bankbook.
Documents can be certified as true copies of the original at the Australian Visa Application Centre
(AVAC) or at the Amphur District Office. You should also provide an English translation of any
document in another language. You may choose to provide original documents and a set of clear
copies. All originals will be returned to you after the copies have been certified.
Do I need to have a health examination?
All applicants are required to meet health requirements. The department uses an online health
system known as e-Health to record your health examination results and conduct your health
assessment. The “e-Health” program requires that medical examinations be conducted only after a
visa application has been validly lodged with the Embassy.
Once the application is lodged, the case officer will provide you with a “Health Assessment” letter
(by email, mail or fax). The Panel Doctor will need to see this letter as part of the medical 3
examination process and you should take the letter with you when you go to the Panel Doctor for
your examination.
Medical examinations must be undertaken by a doctor from a list of approved doctors provided by
the Visa and Immigration Office, Australian Embassy Bangkok. A list of these doctors is on the

Health insurance
Medical treatment in Australia can be very expensive. As a tourist, you are not covered by
Australia's national health scheme, unless there is a reciprocal health care agreement between
Australia and your country. Health care for visitors to Australia is explained on the Medicare
Australia website.
It is recommended that you take out health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia. You
can obtain health insurance through a health insurance provider or travel agent in your country of
residence.
How long will I need to wait for the visa?
Due to the large volume of applications at the beginning of the 2013-2014 program year the
estimated period for a decision could take between 8 weeks or longer from date of lodgement
depending on outstanding requirements.
Can I ask another person to deal with the Embassy?
Australian privacy laws prevent this office from responding to enquiries from people not authorised
by the applicant. This includes the person providing support to the application. If you want to
authorise another person to be able to discuss your application with this office, or receive
correspondence about your application, you should indicate this by using a Form 956 which must
be signed by both applicant and authorised person.
Without a form 956 we cannot talk about your case to anyone else, including your partner or
family members.
Australia’s visa label policy
The Australian Government does not require holders of Australian visas to have a visa label in their
passport.
We electronically record all visas issued to non-citizens providing them permission to travel, enter
and/or remain in Australia. This means that evidence of a visa grant in the form of a visa label is no
longer routinely issued to visa holders. Instead, electronic visas are linked to a visa holder’s current
passport which enables us to provide accurate, secure and real-time information about a visa
holder’s visa details. It is also more secure than issuing a visa label as it reduces the risk of fraud.
Having this electronic connection also enables online checking of visa details by visa holders,
airlines, registered Australian organisations and Australian government agencies.
About your visa
When you receive your Australian visa you are issued with a visa grant notification letter that
explains the conditions of your visa including period of validity and entry requirements. You should
retain this for your own reference and may wish to carry it with you when you travel as it contains
important information about your visa. The information contained within the visa grant notification
letter will help you check your visa details online using the department’s Visa Entitlement
Verification Online service, known as VEVO4

Who should apply for a Work and Holiday, Subclass 462 visa?
The Thailand - Australia Work & Holiday arrangement is a reciprocal program with 500 places
available for Thai applicants each financial year (1 July – 30 June). The program provides young
people with the opportunity for a 12 month holiday with permission to work if they wish so that
they can enjoy the cultural experience and interaction of living and working in Australia.
Participants may only work for any one employer for a maximum of 6 months. Applicants must
also have the financial capacity to support themselves so that they do not have to rely entirely on
earnings from their incidental employment.
You might be able to get this visa if you:
are at least 18 but have not turned 31 years of age at the time you lodge your application
will not be with a dependent child while you are in Australia
have enough money to support yourself on a working holiday (about AUD 5000)
have enough money to buy a return or onward travel ticket at the end of your stay

by the applicant. This includes the person providing support to the application. If you want to
authorise another person to be able to discuss your application with this office, or receive
correspondence about your application, you should indicate this by using a Form 956 which must
be signed by both applicant and authorised person.
Without a form 956 we cannot talk about your case to anyone else, including your partner or
family members.
