The list was accessed from the official website of the drug
regulatory authority of India, the Central Drugs Standard
Control Organization (www.cdsco.nic.in), downloaded and
reviewed by comparing it with the 17th Model WHO EML,
March 2011,[8] the 3rd WHO Model EML for children, March
2011[9] and the National EML 2003.[3] The strengths and
the weaknesses of the list were studied and the weaknesses
were subjectively classified as major and minor, based on
their potential to misinform the users such as prescribers,
pharmacists, drug procurement managers and policy planners.
The critique of the NLEMI 2011 is a personal viewpoint, based
on our own understanding and perceptions of the essential
medicines concept.
