The synergy model describes nurse/patient interrelatedness.
10 It is a model of certified practice that
proposes that the needs or characteristics of patients
and families will influence and drive the characteristics
and competencies of critical care nurse. The model can
be compared to a mirror that helps the nurse to see a
clear picture of a patient’s present condition and also
helps the nurse provide individualized patient care. This
model is based on both patient and nurse characteristics
and links certified practice with patient outcomes. The
concepts of the synergy model include 8 patient needs
and 8 nurse characteristics. The patient characteristics
are based on universal patient needs, which include
resiliency, vulnerability, stability, complexity, resource
availability, participation in care, participation in decision
making, and predictability.10
