American actress Angelina Jolie, UNHCR goodwill ambassador,
flew by
helicopter to a Karen refugee camp yesterday, where she
pledged
US$100,000 (4.26 million baht) of her own money for
vocational and
educational training.
Ms Jolie's visit to Tham Hin camp was her first
refugee-support mission
in Thailand.
Ms Jolie, who has been in Chiang Mai shooting a movie, said
she was
impressed by the camp's strong leadership.
``I've been to camps that are better and worse, but here I
was surprised
that they said they were comfortable with the situation
[inside the
camp] and didn't complain.
``They have many things under their control and they know
what they
want,'' said Ms Jolie, who won an Oscar for a supporting
role in the
movie Girl Interrupted.
