While Brahmins are expected to maintain purity (śuddhi), kings were expected to maintain auspiciousness (maṅgala).
By promoting maṅgala, the king increased prosperity and wellbeing in the kingdom. The king serves a channel for divine power to spread throughout the land.
Traditionally, the Hindu king was considered to have divine power (as has often been the case with kings who supported Buddhism).
