Social scientists have tried to explore a range of issues as analogous to collective action problem. One example is the widespread decline in levels of voting. The supporters of a party have a collective interest in the victory of their candidate. But each of them benefits from their candidate winning irrespective of whether or not they vote: they can again the rewards without paying any costs, such as the tim taken up by casting a vote. What is more, their single vote is unlikely to make any significant difference to the outcome of the election: their actions are unlikely to have any impact on whether or not they attain the reward. Hence the rational strategy is not to vote.
