Volumeofstemcuttingswasthemostimportant characteristic
influencing the survival rate (Table 1). The survival rate of stem
cuttings with 30cm3 was estimated to be 72%, while those with
950 cm3 would have a 99.5% estimated rate of survival.
Short stem cuttings favored early development of buds
(Table 2). At 30 DAP, each stem cutting 20 cm long had an
estimated average of 1.6 developing buds, while the stakes
40 cm long had only 0.5 buds. However, at 75 DAP, longer stem
cuttings had outnumbered the short ones in the counting of
buds. Stakes 20 cm long had 6 developing buds, while those
40 cm had 13 buds. The basal area had no effect on the early
sprouting process. According to Kochhar et al. [10], hormones
play an importing role in the development of roots and
sprouting in stem cuttings of jatropha plants, and the process
of root initiation is influenced by the early mobilization and
metabolization of auxins rather than the total auxin content.
The early sprouting observed in the short stem cuttings (Table
1) probably occurred due to a faster mobilization of auxins
