Non-adherence can have profound clinical
consequences in the treatment of chronic diseases—
especially cancer. Medication non-adherence in
patients with cancer is a growing concern today due
to the increasing availability of new oral agents. Many
factors contribute to patient non-adherence to treatment
regimens. Understanding the potential barriers
and factors that affect patient adherence will help providers
develop strategies to promote patient adherence
to oral treatment regimens. Optimal patient outcomes
require adherence, education, communication,
ongoing monitoring, and follow-up.
