The early 19th century dandy Beau Brummel favored dove gray; he established the idea that subdued clothing is sophisticated and elegant. The idea has largely stuck, and gray is considered classy, traditional, and tasteful, if perhaps a bit safe. A light shade of gray is associated with Cambridge, while Oxford gray is a darker charcoal. In architecture, paler grays can indicate stately old stone buildings and, therefore, the solidity of long-standing institutions; darker grays may intone the grim, gritty look of an industrial town.
