Phubbing is defined as snubbing those around you and instead using your
smartphone. Every Monday I wait along with about a dozen other parents for
our daughters to be dismissed from dance class. Traditionally, this would be
a great time to catch up with other parents and talk about school happenings
or at least the weather. But no, last Monday, I was the only one of nine
parents not on my smartphone. I was being phubbed!
Smartphones are great tools that are meant to make our lives easier, but they
have only eaten up our social time, taken away our time to relax and have
meaningful thought, or even read a book. I even see couples on dates,
phubbing each other as they wait for their food.
How much time in the day do you or your children spend on
smartphones? Don’t you think we could make much better use of our time
and actually converse, play a family game, or read a book? I challenge you
to track the amount of time you spend on your phone per day. Be
disciplined about not using your device in certain situations or certain
hours. Be in control of your time and attention
