Ettlinger, Johnson, and Shealy implemented the “guided discovery” technique in Vermont that focused on avoiding high-risk behavior and positioning (i.e., “phantom foot”), recognizing potentially dangerous skiing situations, and responding quickly to unfavorable conditions. During the 1993–1994 ski season, 4,700 ski instructors and patrollers completed the comprehensive training program at 20 ski areas throughout the United States. As a result, the rate of serious knee injuries decreased by 62% among the trained individuals compared with those who did not participate in the training program.
