Inadequate transportation also affected the ability of Nariva
households to earn a living from fishing and agriculture. According
to the study, nearly three out of four Nariva households derived
some form of income from the sale of produce/catch. However,
their income was highly dependent on selling at the roadside,
where the price is typically poor. In Caroni by contrast, better road
access meant that households were able to transport their goods in
local urban centers, where they can command premium prices.
