Evidence from the contemporary popular press suggests
that firms are increasingly taking interest in the
socially responsible activities of their suppliers. For
example, a 2008 Fortune Magazine article addressed
how IKEA is encouraging suppliers to reduce their
carbon footprint by locating closer to local markets
(Gunther, 2008). More recently, a Wal-Mart press
release and October 2010 Forbes article indicate that
the mega-retailer is requesting that suppliers quantify
their carbon footprint in order for each to determine
their unique environmental impact (Eppstein-Reeves,
2010). These actions, consistent with recent research,
suggest that social responsibility may become an
important supplier selection criterion and challenge
the norm that selection be based solely on price,
delivery, quality, and flexibility (Sarkis & Talluri,
2002; Sarkis et al., 2011; Verma & Pullman, 1998).
