Although it is noted that the Lisu come from various provinces in the North, those in Hua Fai appear to have come only from the hills in Chiang Mai Province. Apart from problems shared with other ethnic groups, such as the lack of land for cultivation, the Lisu had problems of drug addiction and trafficking. When the Government launched its war on drug trafficking and addiction, large numbers of Lisu men were killed (Prasit Leephrecha, Kwancheewan Bua-dang and Panadda Bunyasaranai 2003). Thus their women moved to town in search of a livelihood. This explains the larger proportion of women to men among them. In fact, one informant said her husband is in prison for drug addiction. She is producing traditionally-patterned tablecloths, dishcloths, and other household objects for sale in the Night Bazaar. It is believed that the majority of the Lisu women work in bars and restaurants (Prasit Leephrecha, Kwancheewan Bua-dang and Panadda Bunyasaranai 2003).
