One Million People Evacuated After 7.9 Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Chile
A strong 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Chile’s coast on Wednesday, forcing authorities to evacuate about one million residents along the coast after tsunami warnings were issued.
The epicenter of the quake was about 35 miles west of Illapel and about 150 miles northwest of the Capital, Santiago.
The National Weather Service issued a tsunami alert for the Chilean and Peruvian coastlines. Chile has experienced frequent earthquakes in the last century.
