AFD remains convinced that social priorities and climate-related challenges are compatible within a comprehensive approach to urban development. The Agency puts this principle into practice when it funds — for example — urban renewal projects in central Johannesburg: these rehabilitate office buildings and turn them into affordable housing, densifying the city and curbing travel. Other emerging and developing municipalities — Medellín, Porto Novo, Antananarivo, Casablanca, Izmir — have taken up the challenge: by fostering the return of residents to the heart of more-sustainable cities, they pioneer the path towards a city of tomorrow.
