A ratio commonly used to measure profitability is return on capital employed, where
the measure of profit used is shown as a percentage of the average capital employed in a
firm. Figure 8.7 shows the return on capital employed for listed companies over a period
of time. It can be seen that, as with most other economic variables, it is affected by the
trade cycle and moves in a cyclical way.
