BEIJING ----- A joint expedition of Chinese, Soviet and US climbers who had planned to celebrate “Earth Day” by conquering Everest together finally reached the summit yesterday, 15 days late because of bad weather.
The official New China News Agency said two climbers from each country made it to the top of the 29,028 – foot (8,848 – metre) mountain from the Chinese side in Tibet early in the afternoon.
The team planned to clear up piles of rubbish left on the world’s highest peak by previous expeditions. ----- Reuter
