The DTAC IP RAN part comprises huge quantity of routers. Those routers vary in forwarding/routing capacity/function and link bandwidth. Besides, the connectivity between access sites are not fixed. Depending on wireless expansion requirements, adding sites or physical connection changes happen frequently. In other words, scalability, resiliency, and topology adaptability are the considerations for IP RAN design.
To reach these design goals, the Mixed VPN (L2+L3) solution is adopted for DTAC IP RAN project. Mix-VPN is simple in theory and also easy to configure and maintenance. The aggregate layer configurations are similar to the legacy MPLS VPN, and in Access layer is Layer2 vpn, it’s obviously to different layer2 and layer3 and easy to trouble shooting, requiring less maintenance skills. On Mix-VPN, IGP/MPLS domain is completely isolated by areas on the access ring and aggregation ring. For IGP, deploy ISIS multi process to isolate every domain. Similarly, for MPLS, the LSP is established separately for access layer and aggregation layer. In terms of routing information advertisement, aggregation layer device presents the boundary for route propagation. Only corresponding AGG loopback address is advertised from AGG router to the access ring. This greatly reduces the requirements of routing/LSP capacity on the access ring devices. Besides, access nodes on one access ring are unaware of link break or node faults on another ring, thus improving the network robustness. The configuration for Mix-vpn is also simple when there are new devices to be added to the access ring.
