checked, lead to the death of the society. Population may fall even to the
point of extinction as a result of increasing death rates and decreasing birth
rates; the society may be defeated in war, invaded, its population dispersed
and its customs suppressed; factional disputes may nibble away areas and segments of the population. But these dire events are not infrequently fore-stalled, or at least postponed, by a revitalization movement. Many such movements are religious in character, and such religious revitalization movements
