Phuket is a world-famous destination
and a major source of employment, trade, and
investment for both local and international
business. In 2007 Puket has a significant role
in bringing development to the region by
linking tourists to other destinations such as
Phanggna, and Krabi and boosting their
tourism and economic growth.
However, the rapid growth coupled
with ineffective management has led to several
environmental and social problems including
accumulation of solid waste, wastewater, air
pollution, increased crime, urban sprawl, loss
of local traditions, and the degrading of cultural
values. Despite the risks to the environment
and society brought by current development,
there is continuing pressure to maintain and
grow Phuket’s economic productivity.
