Definition of geriatric palliative medicine
The European Union Geriatric Medical Society (EUGMS) interest group in geriatric palliative medicine has defined geriatric palliative medicine taking into account the specific needs of older patients. The aim was to encourage geriatricians to integrate the main principles of palliative care (i.e, symptom management, talking about dying, advance directives, recognition of disease terminal phase, allowing patients and family to come to rituals and goodbyes) into daily practice. To construct the definition, the group relied on the WHO definition of palliative care, the WHO publication better palliative care for older people and the definitions of geriatric medicine from various organizations .The definition has been reviewed by the complete interest group and by the committee of EUGMS .More recently, the same group tried to map the existing palliative-care structure for geriatric patients in different countries of Europe with the help of a questionnaire M.
