Planning for IT. One of the most important practices for the successful strategic utilization of information technology is IT planning. ough some of our results indicate that IT priorities are often dwarfed by other concerns, an important minority (32 percent) is engaging in long term IT planning. Such planning is more of a concern for nonprofits with budgets greater than $1 million, though nearly 40 percent of nonprofits with budgets less than this mark intend to craft a long term technology plan in the near future. ose with Internet access are more likely to have such a plan. is is in line with evidence from Spigelman and Evans’s (2004) research on British charities. ey found that 79 percent of organizations in 2003 (up from 55 percent in 2000) had some sort of “strategic plan” specifically for the use of the Inter- net, tending to be “medium-sized charities with medium income and larger Web budgets, as well as those that set their sites up earlier and update them more frequently” We have no idea, though, whether these strategies are effective, nor whether they fit into a comprehensive organizational strategy.
