On Thursday, Richard called Wendy and she knew he was unhappy about
something. Richard told Wendy he wasn’t working for Mr. Kelly anymore. Mr. Kelly
asked Richard to do something, but Richard said no. Mr. Kelly fired Richard. Wendy
asked Richard if he would be there at the birthday party at Maxim’s. Richard said
he wanted to be there, but he couldn’t. He told Wendy not to worry.
After the party on Thursday when Mr. Kelly fell on the floor at Maxim’s and
Jennifer took him to the hospital, Wendy had a difficult night. The police asked
her a lot of questions. They took her earrings. She said they were a present from
Mr. Kelly. She told the police in London about the police in Frankfurt. They didn’t
believe her.
Just then there was a knock on the door. It was Richard and Detective
Barrett and another taller man. “Everything is okay!” Richard said. He also told
Jennifer and Wendy that the police detectives were not going to lock him up. They
all came in and finished telling the story.
The policeman told Jennifer that they had just talked to the police in
Frankfurt and learned about Wendy and Richard’s part in catching the thieves
there.
Earlier that morning Richard asked the London police to look at the letter he
had about the egg boxes. The Frankfurt police had not talked to the London police
because they wanted everything to be very secret. They didn’t want Joe Kelly to
hear anything before they caught him. The police didn’t believe Richard, but finally
they called the police in Frankfurt. They also went to Joe Kelly’s house, and found
some people buying jewellry from Mr. Kelly. All the people at Mr. Kelly’s house were
brought into the police station. It looked like Wendy was going to need a new job.
Richard had twenty pounds for his sister, and a birthday present for Wendy
his “favorite girl”. He had a new job. And he promised Wendy that the earrings he
gave her were not stolen.
