High Frequency provides a non-contact method for starting the welding arc.
A high voltage, high cycle AC output is imposed over the welding output, providing an electrical path for the welding output to follow across the arc.
To strike an arc, turn on the power supply, hold the torch in a horizontal position about 2” above the work piece, quickly swing the end of the torch down toward the joint so the end of the electrode is about 1/8” above the work piece, and the arc will strike.
