Vietnam – Len Dong Rituals
Lên đồng is a phenomenon of Shaman in the culture-spiritual life of the Vietnamese. This is a prominent ritual of the Mother Goddess worshiping religion. The nature of this ritual is the multi-incarnations of the Mother Goddess into the empty bodies of the mediums to pray for the best things in the actual life, such as: good health, fortune and happiness (Happiness – fortune – longevity). The spirits are associated with the nation’s human heroes who had great contributions to the country. Some others are legendary.
In the Lên đồng ritual, there must be a harmonious incorporation of music, songs and dance (sacred dance); costumes for the ritual are colorful accordingly to the psychology, emotions, and there is interaction between the performers (male and female mediums) and the participants/audience, creating a sacred, sparkling, illusory and exciting space. There are about different 50-60 spirits to decent or incarnate into the skeletons of the mediums. The duration of a journey of a spirit into the body of a medium last around 15-20 minutes and is called an “incarnation”, during which, the mediums dance and act as the characteristics of the spirit, blessing people with a life of good health, wealth, safe and sound, fortune and happiness, etc.
In 2012, Lên đồng ritual had been inscribed into the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and in 2014 the Vietnamese State submitted it to UNESCO for its possible inscription into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
