Intravenous (IV) fluids are begun to prevent dehydration if the patient is experiencing symptoms. Coagulation times are monitored if jaundice is present, and vitamin K, if needed, is administered prior to surgery to improve clotting ability of the blood. The patient scheduled for surgery has similar to those of any patient having abdominal surgery. Teaching depends to some degree on whether or not the surgery is a standard procedure or a laparoscopic procedure
